Enjoy the Serenity of One of Philadelphia's Unique Cultural Landscapes
The tranquil beauty of Andalusia's grounds includes spectacular flowers, trees, graperies and plants for the garden enthusiast. The gardens feature rare plants and trees and collections of delphiniums, peonies, roses, irises, digitalis' and so much more. Three specific areas of interest include the Graperies, the Green Walk and the Pool Pavilion Gardens.
The Graperies
Within the stone walls of the Graperies, where formerly hothouse grapes were raised, a formal rose garden exists today. The garden features a collection of American Hybrid Tea Roses and fruit trees.
The Green Walk
In the late 1960's, James Biddle, Nicholas Biddle's great-great grandson, redesigned the Green Walk as it is today as a wonderful collection of dwarf conifers. This collection is set off by beautiful perennial beds, spring flowering trees and bulbs.
Pool Pavilion Gardens
The swimming pool was installed in the 1960's by James Biddle and the pool pavilion was added a few years later. The perennial beds in this garden were installed thanks to the generosity of one of James Biddle's dear friends, Dona Guimares, a former editor of Mademoiselle Magazine and the New York Times. Upon her death, Ms. Guimares' bequeathed the funds for the redesign and installation of the current Pool Pavilion Gardens.
